Winter Solstice Dormant Rest

Shorter days and longer nights mark the beginning of the Winter Solstice on December 21 when the Sun stands still before reversing and beginning its slow return. While everything in nature appears to be in a dormant frozen state of rest, the seeds buried deep in the darkness of the Earth are gathering new energy for the renewal of life in the spring. This rhythmic dance between the Earth and Sun is a powerful time. For thousands of years, this natural cycle embedded deep in the human psyche has inspired Non-Christian and Christians to celebrate the rebirth and return of the Sun’s light in some way via various spiritual ceremonies (and gift giving).

In essence, this external dormancy of the Winter Solstice provides us with an opportunity to prepare for the rapid growth following the return of the light. During this period when everything on the Earth is resting, we take a conscious journey into our own inner darkness to inventory the dormant shadow aspects of our being. We reflect on all that remains hidden beneath the surface that is not serving our greatest and highest good in order to liberate our minds from the seeds of the past – our burdens and pain, etc. Purification via death for all that has gone before enables us to focus our intent on planting new seeds, which will gather strength during the dormancy period and burst forth in response to the returning warmth of the Sun’s light.

May your Winter Solstice, Yule Tide, Christmas, Hanukkah etc be filled with much warmth and light.

  1. This really speaks to me right now Karen. And figuring out what it is in my life that feeds my soul takes time and energy. I guess that’s where the lettin go of energy drainers comes into play.

  2. Know it speaks to me louder and louder each day/year but that’s another article. 🙂 Also, think we all know what it is that feeds us but taking the time to eat what’s good for us every day seems to be the challenge for most of us….

  3. Karen!!! I opened my computer today, after celebrating the Solstice and Eclipse together out of town, and I read your words and they answer my internal questions about this time and I just wanted to put it out there that I am truly grateful that you are in my life!

Happy New Year! May it be blessed with positive energy and good health!

  4. Thank you, and i wish you the same! 🙂
